Our Curriculum

Through our programs, your child will thrive by:

  • Engaging in sensory-rich, hands-on activities
  • Developing practical life skills that foster independence
  • Building self-confidence in a supportive and nurturing environment

Montessori education is more than just academics. It’s about empowering children to be independent, creative thinkers, equipped with the skills they need for future success.

Montessori Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed to foster curiosity, independence, and a love for learning. The Montessori method provides children with the freedom to explore subjects at their own pace, while our educators guide them through key developmental stages.

Our curriculum focuses on:

Practical Life Skills:

Helping children develop independence and responsibility through daily tasks, fostering concentration and coordination.

Sensorial Exploration:

Engaging the senses through hands-on materials to deepen understanding of the world around them by making abstract concepts concrete.

Mathematics:

Children work with concrete representations of large quantities through golden and colored bead material, seeing concepts like exchanging and operations come to life.

Language:

Through phonemic learning, children learn sounds and forms of letters first, then use those skills to build words, write stories, and read simple books.

Cultural Studies:

Encouraging curiosity about geography, science, history, and the arts through integrated, child-led projects and research.

At Chesapeake Montessori School, students are empowered to think critically and collaborate with their peers. They engage in work that fosters both knowledge and real-world application, promoting independence, responsibility, and a love of discovery.

Our Montessori curriculum is designed to help children grow holistically, supporting not only their academic development but their emotional and social growth as well.

Specialty Programs

Our specialty programs are thoughtfully integrated into the Montessori curriculum and designed to enrich the whole child—nurturing creativity, cultural awareness, physical development, and a lifelong love of learning. Each program is guided by Montessori-trained specialists who honor the child’s individual development and natural curiosity.

Art: Children’s House – Upper Elementary

Art is a process-oriented experience, where children are free to explore materials and express themselves creatively. Our Montessori art curriculum focuses on technique, observation, and the works of master artists while honoring the child’s unique vision.

Children’s House through Upper Elementary students work with a variety of media—from pastels and clay to watercolors and collage—developing fine motor skills and artistic confidence. In keeping with Montessori’s emphasis on beauty and order, students are also introduced to design, balance, and cultural art forms.

Our Infants and Toddlers are not left out—they joyfully participate in creative expression and are featured in our Annual Spring Art Exhibit, showcasing the artistic spirit of all ages.

Music: Infant – Upper Elementary

Music is a universal language woven throughout every age and stage—from our youngest infants to our Upper Elementary students. Rooted in the Montessori philosophy, our music program nurtures each child’s natural sense of rhythm and pitch through hands-on exploration, movement, singing, and the use of real instruments.

Children are introduced to musical notation, history, and composition in age-appropriate ways, cultivating listening skills, concentration, and joyful expression. Music is not taught in isolation, but integrated into the classroom environment, deepening each child’s appreciation and understanding of culture and self.

Physical Education: Children’s House – Upper Elementary

Movement is central to Montessori education, and our Physical Education program supports the development of gross motor skills, coordination, balance, and teamwork.

P.E. lessons are carefully designed to meet the needs of each developmental stage—from cooperative games in Children’s House to more structured athletic activities in Upper Elementary. Emphasis is placed on effort, collaboration, and personal growth over competition.

Through purposeful movement and mindful physical challenges, students build confidence, resilience, and a deep appreciation for caring for their bodies.

Spanish: Children’s House – Upper Elementary

Our Spanish program begins in Children’s House and continues through Upper Elementary, building a strong foundation in language acquisition during the child’s sensitive period for language development.

Students are introduced to Spanish through songs, stories, games, and hands-on materials that align with Montessori’s multi-sensory approach. As children progress, they expand vocabulary, practice conversational phrases, and explore grammar in a meaningful and developmentally appropriate way.

Through Spanish, students gain cultural awareness and begin to see themselves as global citizens—curious and respectful of the world around them.
